This year in Durham Cathedral the year six leavers’ events were an exciting opportunity for almost 3000 primary school children who attended. With six services over three days the children took part in prayer spaces which enabled them to think through various aspects of their transition from primary school to secondary school. With Lego, pipe-cleaner people, hands and speech bubbles the children were able to thank God, ask God, and have their say on things that matter to them. We then had a short service to mark the occasion and heard from Bishops Paul and Sarah, Archdeacon Bob Cooper, Canon Stuart Bain and The Dean of Durham Cathedral. Each day worship was led by one of our primary school choirs, bringing much joy to the service.

Pupils from Ian Ramsey CE Academy Stockton, Venerable Bede Church of England Academy Sunderland, Whitburn Church of England Academy South Tyneside and St Aidan’s Church of England Academy Darlington were on hand to lead the prayer spaces throughout the cathedral and were a shining example of young leadership in our diocesan secondary schools.
