“Soon it will be Valentine’s Day. For those of you who are feeling less amorous, this is the place to be”.
Perhaps not the best way to introduce hosting an event to your church but as it turned out, 200 people swapped their romantic sentimentality, to hear about God’s passionate love for us as ‘Paradise lost and Paradise regained’.
The day began with three vans discharging four men in black, the requisite uniform of a professional production crew. As lighting rigs were assembled and sound equipment installed a giant LED TV screen rose panel by panel across the full width of the chancel.
Bible Society for many churches in the North means Open The Book (a great tool for taking into schools). Tonight, however, we were treated to another aspect of their work – The Bible Course. The Greatest Story Ever Toured was an eclectic mix of comedy from Paul Kerenza (scriptwriter for Miranda, Top Gear and Not Going Out), live music from Surrey-based singer Emily Bollon who moved effortlessly from one song clip to another and Bible teaching from Dr Andrew Ollerton. The first half began with Genesis and the journey of the ups and downs of Israel’s history. After exiling for the interval, the second half began with the Gospels and the story of Jesus coming into the world, the arrival of the Holy Spirit, the early church and culminated with Revelation.
The production values were first rate and a talented team of people provided a hugely enjoyable event. Valentine’s Day may have passed but ‘O God set our hearts on fire with love for you’. The Bible Course might just help us deepen that love.
