A successful community coffee shop run by the church in Middleton St George village near Darlington has celebrated its second birthday. Larry’s operates from the local WI Hall and is run by members of the congregation of St Laurence’s Church, which meets in the local primary school and is part of the Anglican Diocese of Durham. Over the past two years, volunteers from the church have hosted Larry’s every Thursday, serving all who come through the doors with a hot drink and a warm welcome. The venture has been a resounding success and Larry’s celebrated its second birthday by sending an open invitation to everyone in the village to come along and share the experience. The team organising the event also sought the views of their guests on other ways in which the church can fulfil its mission to serve the local community. Larry’s is open each Thursday from 8.45am until 12 noon in the WI Hall, Neasham Road, Middleton St George. Julie Mathieson, one of the one of the team that came up with the original idea, said: “The idea came about two years ago when we were talking about providing somewhere for people to get out to meet people and the idea of a coffee shop came up. “We thought what a great idea, giving people the chance to come and join us. We hope that it will continue to grow and are trying to find out what else people would like us to do.” Jan Robson, who runs the coffee shop with a team of volunteers, said: “It works really well. We have 20 regulars and new people coming along as well. It‘s very much a community initiative.” Local vicar Revd Paul Neville said: “It’s a way of people getting to know other people in the village.” A full Audio Interview is available here: Audio Interview The ame audio interview is also available to hear on our Audioboo channel here: Audioboo
