Candlemas at St Mark’s Church Darlington saw over 70 people attend a 4pm service for children and their families. St Mark’s have recently introduced a quarterly family service at 4pm and those who attended saw the church filled with candles and lanterns. In the candlelight, Elizabeth Baker brought along her “story chair” and told the story of Jesus being brought to the temple by Mary and Joseph, from Simeons’s perspective. After the service everyone sampled a newly established tradition of eating Candlemas biscuits; biscuits which were baked in the shape of lanterns and candles. Fr Paul Baker who led the service said “It was great to welcome those who ordinarily don’t attend church from week to week. It has given us great optimism for the future and we hope to continue these services over the coming year” Revd Caroline Ferguson Curate St Mark’s Church, Darlington.
