Bishop Paul and Mayor David of Bishop Auckland blessed and welcomed the thousands who thronged to the Market Place to watch St John Secondary School perform the Nativity and sing along Christian Carols and contemporary songs with their Sixth Form students. Rev’d Eileen Harrop, Entrepreneur Priest and dramatist Jane Crawford of Bishop Auckland Fellowship of Christian Churches produced the two scenes of Angels appearing to the Shepherds, and the Wise Kings following the Star to Mary, Joseph and Jesus, with the school’s music, drama and art departments.
This is the first year secondary and sixth form students have joined primary schools in this annual Christmas countdown and tree lighting festival. Meanwhile, inside St Anne’s Church, Vicar Matthew Keddilty and the parish team of children and young people leaders and the cafe led by Reader Kate Taylor, welcomed hundreds of families flooding into the church to view more than 2000 baubles on Christmas trees decorated by all the town’s primary schools. The parish also supported Feeding Families, a local charity who received donations and signed up donors in the church. Bishop Auckland is a town that truly celebrates together – the Nativity and opening of St Anne’s Church being at the specific request of the Town Council.
