The Rt Revd Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham is to host refugee welcome event in Gateshead on 18th May 2017.

Community sponsorship provides a safe and legal route for refugees to resettle and integrate successfully in a new community.  It equips local communities to play a vital role in resettling refugee families. A similar Canadian scheme has welcomed and integrated over a quarter of a million refugees into communities across Canada, over the last 40 years.

Having been initiated by the Prime Minister, Theresa May, the first family of refugees resettled under the scheme were welcomed to the UK by the Archbishop of Canterbury in July 2016. The impact on the families resettled so far and the congregations and groups participating has been profound. Over the next three years the Home Office is looking to grow the numbers of refugees welcomed into the UK by churches and other community groups.

Bishop Paul and other speakers will share about how communities in the North-East can take part in this exciting initiative. The workshop will take place at Gateshead Civic Centre, Thursday 18th May, 6:30pm-8:00pm. Tea and coffee will be provided.
