The next steps in the process leading to the formal recognition of The Right Revd. Paul Butler as Bishop of Durham were announced today Tuesday (15th October). The Right Revd Paul Butler Currently the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham was announced by the office of the Prime Minister as the Bishop of Durham – Designate on 12th September 2013. The next steps in the process of Bishop Paul becoming the Bishop of Durham will be:
- Election by the College of Canons (lay & clergy) of Durham Cathedral on the 22nd October. (This is a closed private meeting). The results of the election will be publicly proclaimed at evensong in the Cathedral on the same day.
- A confirmation of Election in York Minster (20th January 2014 6.30pm) in service lead by the Archbishop of York.
- Meeting with the Her Majesty The Queen where he takes an oath acknowledging her as Sovereign and Supreme Governor (called homage) – will take place sometime between Election and Inauguration. (This is a closed private meeting).
- Inauguration of Public Ministry (Enthronement) in Durham Cathedral (22nd February 2014) in a public service of welcome to the Diocese.
In addition to the formal steps outlined above, Bishop Paul will also take part in the ancient Falchion Ceremony on Croft Bridge, Darlington and various other private and public events leading up to his Inauguration of ministry in Durham Cathedral on Saturday 22nd February 2014.
